MENTORING GROUP FOR EMERGING MAKERS
During 9 months of 2011-2012 I mentored 5 and at times 7 "emerging" furniture makers. We met in my shop in Thetford—and I visited their shops—where we discussed design, working with clients, using various tools, and many practical and decorative techniques. Our discussion was far ranging, but always came back to what was useful for them in dealing with the issues of specific projects they were building. My goal was simply to improve their skills and to help them to prosper in this challenging field of building the highest quality furniture.
In January 2013 I started in with a new group of 9 emerging makers, 8 men and one woman, ages 21 - 40. Each is building a piece of furniture of their design, one that suits their interests and skill level. So far each meeting has focused on their evolving designs, planning an effective and efficient strategy for building, choosing materials, and demonstrations of some of the skills or techniques they might need.
Stay tuned for more updates on this mentoring group, and plans for an exhibition in the fall of the completed furniture.
Winter 2012 - 13 Series at My Shop
Thetford, VT
Saturday Seminars, Demilune table will be the focus, five classes spread out over four months (Dec. - March). Each student designs and builds based on a piece I explain and build during classes. It's real, live action mistakes, recoveries, and triumphs. This is the fourth year and project.
